mind your rubbish tour 2008

Ari Derfel's Save Your Trash

Inspired by Ari Derfel's "Save Your Trash" campaign, a team of AcroYoga teachers from the United States will re-create the endeavor while on the "Mind Your Rubbish" Tour across Europe in the spring of 2008. These teachers have committed to personally carrying all the trash they create during their travels, trying not to exceed what can fit in one back pack for 1-3 months. They will be sharing their experience along the way with AcroYoga workshop participants, igniting discussion around how the practice of yoga and mindfulness can expand into the choices we make in our daily lives, especially in relation to the creation and disposal of rubbish, waste, garbage, and last but not least, trash.

There will also be a contingent of teachers who will be conducting the same campaign while living residentially in the US. They will be saving their trash while living at home, and taking it with them to their classes and workshops domestically.

Workshop participants will also be invited to join the campaign by pledging to save their own trash for a set period of time, and will be encouraged to share their experience with the global community via blogs and photos on a central website.

This project is in partnership with prAna, a yoga clothing company that will be purchasing wind credits to make the traveling carbon neutral, along with To-Go Ware, a company which will be providing the teachers with sustainable portable food carriers and utensil sets.

The Tour will travel to:

FAQs
Do you literally save EVERYTHING?
Yes, we save all trash that we personally generate, with the exception of food waste, which is what makes garbage smell.

How can I reduce my trash?
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle is a great mantra. Carrying a reusable coffee/tea mug is a great start, along with a reusable water bottle, food carriers, and a shopping bag. How about some reusable utensils too? Even a cloth napkin can be helpful.
